motorway
(independent)
even when he was fronting of human bondage, whish always struck me as a not entirely convincing marriage of anglophile post punk and nine inch nails-inspired alternative rock, pete winkler had a pop fixation, writing beatlesque melodies that glimmered beneath the noise. with motorway, winkler's fixation is out of ther closet, albeit in a much more sympathetic , much more listenable setting. on this four-song sampler produced by better than ezra's tom drummond, motorway showcases a rootsy power pop sound that adds mersybeat hooks to driving modern rock. "yonn" the clearest echo of of human bondage, is an aggressive modern rock rave-up:"padagonia"a melody driven rocker. "caroline" combines a soaring melody and jangly guitars, and "everafter" is a folksy ballad. a promising debut by a band worth keepin an eye on. -mark miester
